Beaver facts
- Beavers once numbered in the hundreds of millions across North America; trapping cut that to perhaps 100,000 by 1900. They are now back to an estimated 10–15 million.
- Oregon is "The Beaver State", and the beaver has been its official state animal since 1969.
- New York's state seal and flag both feature beavers, a nod to the pelt trade that funded early New Amsterdam.
- In the arid West, land managers deliberately install beaver dam analogues — human-built fake dams — to lure beavers in and restore dried-out creeks.
- Beaver ponds stayed green through several recent Western wildfires, acting as natural firebreaks and refuges for wildlife.
